What Are Memory Care Facilities?

A memory care facility is an ideal place for older adults who need assistance with daily activities and needs around-the-clock care. There are types of memory care facilities, depending on the specific needs of the residents: independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing/nursing home, hospice, or memory care community.

To choose the right type of memory care facility for a loved one, it's important to understand the differences between each type.

Independent Living Memory Care Accompaniments: These facilities provide round-the-clock assistance with basic needs such as bathing, dressing, and eating but allow residents some level of autonomy. Independent living homes usually have smaller crews than other types of facilities and can be more affordable.

Assisted Living Memory Care Facilities: Assisted living provides round-the-clock assistance with many of the same needs as independent living but also includes additional services such as personalized meals, help with finances, and medication schedules. Assisted living homes usually have larger crews than independent living homes and can be more expensive.

Skilled Nursing/Nursing Home Memory Care Facilities: This type of facility offers round-the-clock assistance with basic needs but allows residents some level of self-direction and independence due to the skilled nurses on staff. Nursing homes typically have large crews and are more expensive than assisted living or independent living homes.
