Open bao, also known as gua bao, is made by half folding a flat lotus leaf bun wrapped around a filling. This bao was originally from Fujian, mainland China. It was brought to Taiwan later and became a popular street food.

There are many options when it comes to the contents of your bao. Depending on where you live, the fillings available will vary. You’ll most likely get a traditional bao in Taipei with an open-style gua bao.
