Basically there are four different classifications of mountain bikes.

1. A fully rigid- rigid mountain bike has a frame that has a rigid and fixed rear fork without suspension.

2. Hard Tail- hardtail mountain bikes have a frame without rear suspension, and a bike is usually used with the front suspension.

3. Gently Tail- Soft Tail Mountain bikes have a frame with a small amount of rear suspension but are activated by the flex of the frame rather than by the pivot.

4. Dual or full suspension- Dual or full suspension mountain bike has a frame with a front suspension fork and rear suspension with rear shock and linkage that makes the rear wheels move in the pivot.
