Track Listing

On An Island -- the third David Gilmour album and the artist's first studio recordings since Pink Floyd's 1994 multi-platinum The Division Bell -- will be in stateside stores Tuesday, March 7.
From the first moments of the sound collage that begins On An Island, you know It's a special experience that not only bears comparison with the best of Pink Floyd, but also confirms their
lead guitarist and singer as an outstanding solo artist. Here he reveals a personal vision and a breadth of styles -- folk, jazz, orchestral and rock -- brought together as a unified piece through
his lyrical guitar playing and instantly recognizable voice. With orchestrations by the renowned Polish composer Zbigniew Preisner and a luminous production (assisted by Roxy Music's Phil
Manzanera), virtuosity abounds. On An Island Guest artists include David Crosby and Graham Nash singing harmonies, Robert Wyatt playing the cornet, Caroline Dale on cello, Alasdair
Molloy on glass harmonica and Pink Floyd's Richard Wright guesting on Hammond organ. Gilmour shares writing credits with writer Polly Samson, continuing a collaborative partnership
that began with The Division Bell. The album's songs tell of shared experiences that evoke a breadth of moods, from the hauntingly beautiful title track 'On An Island' (with a guitar
performance set to enter the Gilmour canon of classics) to the meditative 'The Blue' and 'A Pocketful of Stones,' as well as the heavier rock and blues numbers 'Take A Breath' and 'This
Heaven.'  In the spirit of intimacy, this album sees Gilmour's debut on the saxophone, as well as contributions by contemporaries from his pre-Floyd days. On An Island is a collection of
songs and instrumentals that had its genus in the critically acclaimed 2002 London Festival Hall concerts. Gilmour has stepped out of his super-group to discover he's still at his peak -- and
he's rightly pleased. "It's my best and most personal work," he says.  "Making it with my musician friends has been a positive experience on so many levels." And touring it this spring can
only take him to a new high. The ten tracks on On An Island, which has been produced by David Gilmour, Phil Manzanera and Chris Thomas, are: Castellorizon, On An Island, The Blue, Take
a Breath, Red Sky at Night, This Heaven, Then I Close My Eyes, Smile, A Pocketful of Stones, and Where We Start.
Additional performers on the album include David Crosby, Graham Nash, Richard Wright, Robert Wyatt, Phil Manzanera, Jools Holland, Georgie Fame, Caroline Dale, Guy Pratt, Willie
Wilson, and, from Pink Floyd's earliest incarnation, Rado 'Bob' Klose. The ON AN ISLAND tour starts in Europe in March, goes to USA in April and returns to the UK at the end of May, with
concerts in Manchester, Glasgow and London.

Another version of On an Island in the future?

The BBC recently interviewed David, talks led up to how he finishes a album and some rather tasty
news popped up

How do you know when a song is finished?

When you have no more time, then It's finished. I could put out a version of this album three months
before we finished and it would have an awful lot of qualities and it would be very different. I'm tempted
to do it in fact - go back to the versions of these songs before they were anything near the finished stage
and put that out later as an ancillary release. We'll see if I get to that. In the very last week of mixing,
you're still making fairly radical changes to what's going on. You can read the complete interview Here.

David Gilmour Tour warm up at the Mermaid Theatre

On March 7th, David Gilmour held a special concert for the BBC. The event
showcased David's forthcoming album, "On An Island", but also include a small
selection of David's favourite Pink Floyd tracks, too. The appearance was at
London's Mermaid Theatre, which has a maximum capacity of 600. The show was
recorded for an hour-long broadcast on BBC Radio 2 and is streaming to the left.
We realise the quality is not the greatest, but keep in mind this show was a warm
up and its available to you for free! Outside The Wall does have Setlists and Show
info available, but to prevent Spoilers we are asking that if you would like to see
them to join the Outside The Wall forums. So if you have not signed up yet, hurry
and do so

On an Island 5.1 to be released in the future

Sound & Vision have just posted a interview with David Gilmour on their website. In
the chat with David, he confirms a surround sound mix of On An Island.

Saying that "unfortunately, we're stuck with boring old stereo for the time being",
David talks about  the recording process:

"My initial intention was to release it in 5.1 at the same time as the CD, but we
won't get around to finishing the mix until the tour and the summer holiday are
over. We recorded all of the drums and orchestral stuff in surround. While I do like
to keep the rhythm section more or less in stereo, I tend to bring some of the more
fluid things — voices, keyboard textures — around from the front to the sides for a
much wider effect. You have to get a feeling for the sounds that are possible and
natural enough for your brain to deal with. I don't like to put too many instruments
behind the listener."
The surround mix has been taken care of with the help of engineer Andy Jackson,
who has worked closely with James Guthrie.

Elsewhere in the interview, David talks of the development process of his work,
and how On An Island came together. The interview also mentions the forthcoming
re-releases of his first two solo album - the eponymous debut in 1978, and 1984's
About Face. It mentions that they will include bonus tracks.
David Confirms On an Island tour DVD

In a wonderful interview with David Jensen from the Capital Gold network, David confirmed that he plans on recording the RAH shows
this May for a possible DVD release. We know many Pink Floyd and David fans have been wondering this and we are proud to tell you
its going to happen! The interview is really great and well worth the listen so due check it out
here.

Further News on DVD

In the April 2006 issue of Total Production Mark Cunningham reports while In Amsterdam, Mark Brickman Davids lighting director  was
being pressured to make final decisions about upgrading the rig for May's Royal Albert Hall dates which will be filmed for a
forthcoming DVD release. "When we get back from the American leg, we're hoping to set up at the Rehearsal Arena at LiteStructures
[supplier of the stage risers] to prepare for the Albert Hall, and I can imagine we'll add a few extras while we're there. Maybe lasers.
We'll see." Has there been any temptation to inject a few visual references from past tours into the Floyd section of the show? "No,"
insisted Brickman. "This was never going to be like a scaled-down Pink Floyd show and we definitely weren't going to use the old,
round back screen - I wanted to create something fresh and a new look for David, and It's been fun."

DVD Now Official

David Gilmour's website has confirmed plans to film two of the UK tour dates at London's Royal Albert Hall for release on DVD.
Although most readers of this site already knew that, it is good news to get official confirmation that the nights of May 29 and 30 will be
the ones Videotaped. Directing will be David Mallet, who directed David Gilmour In Concert from London's Royal Festival Hall, and has
been long associated with David. David Mallet's long and varied track record includes shows and performances by Queen, Pink
Floyd's Pulse, The Three Tenors, Cirque du Soleil, U2 Popmart, AC/DC Live at Donington, and many more. As most fans will know,
some special guests (including Sam Brown, David Crosby and Graham Nash) have dropped in to perform songs with David in the
course of the tour, and it is possible that some guests may be added to the bill at the Royal Albert Hall. However, nothing has been
confirmed yet, but as soon as it is, it will be announced here.
New Single to be released

David's management have announced a new
single will be released. The single Smile will be out
in the UK & Europe, available as a 3-track
commercial single and downloads. Lead track will
be an edit of the album version, and bonus tracks
will include the commercial release of Island Jam.
This is great news, but the question is will David
release a single here in the states?
David appeared on Jay Leno

David was a guest on the Tonight Show with Jay
Leno on April 20th. The band did two songs, a
shortened version of On an Island with Crosby
and Nash and a fantastic version of Wish you
were here, with a Piano solo by Rick! Watch it

Crosby and Nash guest in NYC

The US leg of the On An Island tour opened in a spectacular fashion, with special
guests David Crosby and Graham Nash bringing the house down at Radio City
Music Hall. As you can imagine the shows were very special (see the forum for the
full setlist), but the addition of Crosby & Nash took the musicianship to new
heights. Rapturously received by the rabid NY audience, David and Graham added
their mellifluous trademark harmonies to not only the On An Island title track, but
also The Blue, and even Shine On You Crazy Diamond.

As if that weren't enough, they stunned the already delirious hordes by returning to
the stage one final time in the encores, in between Wish You Were Here and
Comfortably Numb. They performed Find The Cost Of Freedom, acappella with
David Gilmour, on the first live occasion ever as the three of them. Find The Cost Of
Freedom is a Stephen Stills composition, best-known for its inclusion on Crosby
Stills Nash & Young's 2-LP live set Four-Way Street. Let's hope it won't be the last
live airing from the new three kings of harmony. Expect a review and Pictures very
soon. Its taking some time to go through it all. For those of you I met in NYC it was
a pleasure! Thanks to Ellie and Simon for a fantastic lunch on thursday.
AOL stream and David in the theatre!

On AOL Music starting Friday, April 21st You will
be able to view a stream of some songs David
did live for a select group of people in NYC on
April 7th. He performed On An Island/This
Heaven/Take A Breath/Smile/High Hopes, and
Comfortably Numb. You can view this
Here
David also had a one night only broadcast at
participating Regal theatres in the US on May
16th of the Mermaid gig. Lots of people have
emailed in disappointed with the quality and
sound. We must admit that we agree having
seen it first hand in Cleveland. The sound was
decent at our particular theatre, but it was
apparent it was not fixed up as well as described.
RAH special guests

David Bowie, Crosby and Nash and Robert Wyatt
showed up at the first Rah show. Bowie sang
fantastic versions of Arnold Lane and joined Rick
and David for Comfortably Numb. The second night
featured Mica Paris on The Great Gig In The Sky.
The third Night Featured Mica and Nick Mason!

Nick Mason surprise guest night 3

Once again Outside The Wall told you months in
advance about something special, the critics
slammed us and now we prove them wrong again!
In a fitting end to David's Royal Albert Hall shows,
Nick Mason joined David Gilmour and Richard
Wright for the encores of the third and final night.
After another great show which again featured
Crosby and Nash, Robert Wyatt on Then I Close My
Eyes and Mica Paris on The Great Gig In The Sky,
the hall erupted when Nick sat down behind Steve's
drum kit for Wish You Were Here. Remaining in
place for Find The Cost Of Freedom, he picked up
his sticks again and led the band into Comfortably
Numb, to add the crowning glory to a truly great tour.
Thanks to Sue aka Old Hippie for the Pictures!
David to begin a new album shortly?

According to Jim Fox of Mojo, after the Award ceremony of which David won the life
time achievement award, David said the following in a interview

David Gilmour has begun writing new songs saying his current tour are the most
enjoyable concerts he's played.

"Maybe the planets are in the right alignment, I feel like I'm playing the songs better
than I have for years, it's been wonderful. It's made me think about new songs
which I didn't think would be so soon. The next record will be quicker than the 22
years this one took".

Outside The Wall does have Setlists, Pictures, and
Show info available, but to prevent Spoilers we are
asking that if you would like to see them to join the
Outside The Wall forums.

David to take part in Abbey Road sessions

Fremantle International Distribution (FID), the distribution arm of global production
outfit FremantleMedia, has picked up the rights to distribute the groundbreaking
music series, Live From Abbey Road, which will see some of the world’s biggest
artists such as The Killers, The Who, Paul Simon and Diana Ross, perform some
of their greatest hits in the world renowned Abbey Road Studios.
Under an exclusive global deal with Live From Abbey Road Limited, FID is set to
take Live From Abbey Road to broadcasters worldwide. The major new 12 x 60
minute music series will have its premiere on the UK’s Channel 4 in November
2006, coinciding with the studios’ 75th anniversary. Live from Abbey Road is
currently being filmed at the legendary north London studios and will feature a host
of international A-list artists, both new and established. Each one hour episode will
offer a unique insight into the world of the musician and the magical process of
music making, as they rehearse, discuss their work, and build towards the final
exclusive performance. Artists on the bill to date include Paul Simon, Richard
Ashcroft, The Killers, The Who, LeAnn Rimes, David Gilmour, Dave Matthews,
Massive Attack, Corinne Bailey Rae and Diana Ross, with many more to follow.
Producers of Live From Abbey Road, Michael Gleason and Peter Van Hooke said:
“We are delighted to have Fremantle International Distribution as our programme
distributor. Their proven and impressive track record in selling programmes to
major international markets will ensure that this great new series will become a
major global broadcast brand.”
New OAI release

Columbia Records will release a deluxe expanded edition of David Gilmour's "On An Island," on November 21. The new edition will include David's album in its entirety, plus an
exclusive DVD of live material of the April 2006 AOL Sessions in New York with six tracks: "On An Island," "This Heaven," "Smile," "Take A Breath," "High Hopes," and "Comfortably
Numb." The DVD also premieres a rare new take (Abbey Road Session August 2006) on Syd Barrett's "Astronomy Domine".

Update

Gilmour's own website has now provided an update on what this new, limited edition will bring people when it appears on November 20th (Europe), and November 28th (North
America and rest of the world). The CD (exactly as previously released) will be partnered with a bonus DVD. This will feature the Pink Floyd guitarist's complete April 2006 AOL
Sessions in New York, presenting all six tracks: "On An Island," "This Heaven," "Smile," "Take A Breath," "High Hopes," and "Comfortably Numb."

The DVD also includes from the Abbey Road Session in August 2006, Syd Barrett's "Astronomy Domine" as a taster of the Channel 4 special being shown in December. And, as a
taster for David's live concert DVD, due out early next year, is "Take A Breath" from London's Royal Albert Hall.

David's website have clarified the presentation of this edition. They say: "the packaging will be different from the original album release. In Europe, it will be contained in the original
'book' case, but with a dark red spine cloth instead of the regular black one. There will be silver foil block lettering on the back stating that it is a limited edition. That's the EMI
version.

"The Sony version (for the rest of the world) will have the DVD housed in a cardboard wallet, featuring one of Polly's tour photographs. This will be shrink-wrapped to the original
'book' style CD." They also clarify that the sound is PCM Stereo, not 5.1 Surround Sound, and that the release of this bonus DVD "has no impact upon the release of David's
forthcoming concert DVD, which documents the 'On An Island' tour. That's still to come and will be available next year."
On an Island song nominated for Grammy!

The 49th annual Grammy Awards nominees were announced, and amongst those in the running is David Gilmour. He has received a nomination for Best Rock Instrumental
Performance for Castellorizon, the first track on his 2006 album "On An Island".

A number of you will recall that David plays guitar on the Alan Parsons album "A Valid Path", and this too has been nominated, as Best Surround Sound Album.

The 49th Grammy Awards ceremony will be held on February 11th, at Staples Center in Los Angeles, and will be broadcast live in the US in high definition TV and 5.1 surround
sound on CBS from 8 - 11:30pm ET/PT.

David is amongst a large group of British performers who have been nominated, including Sir Paul McCartney, Sting, UB40, and James Blunt, who is up for five awards. Neil Young
and Bob Dylan, favourites of Pink Floyd band members, both have a number of nominations as well.

David's nomination is in category 19, and he is up against the Arctic Monkeys (Chin Li's Flying Bird Kick), The Flaming Lips (The Wizard Turns On...), Peter Frampton (Black Hole
Sun), and Joe Satriani (Super Colossal).
